You pay close attention to what you eat—but do you know what’s in the products you put on your skin?
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it absorbs up to 60% of what you apply. Even more concerning? Children absorb 40–50% more than adults. That means the lotions, shampoos, and makeup you use every day may be quietly adding to your body’s toxic load.
The average woman is exposed to over 500 synthetic chemicals daily—most of them through personal care products like moisturizer, mascara, foundation, and perfume. Some of these ingredients were originally designed to soften concrete or clean engine parts.
Others include nitrates, hormone disruptors, and even known carcinogens.
Want to know what’s really in your products?
Check them on the EWG Skin Deep® database.
It’s a free tool that helps you understand the safety of your everyday personal care items—from shampoo to sunscreen.
Read labels like you would for food.
If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin. Studies show that using some common drugstore shampoos can expose your liver to the same amount of nitrates you’d get from eating a pound of bacon—after just one wash. Ingredients like BHA, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and DEA are linked to everything from hormone disruption and early puberty to liver and kidney damage. And yet, most are still legal in personal care products.
Know the worst offenders.
Some of the most toxic ingredients often show up in seemingly innocent products like deodorant, foundation, eye cream, and even acne treatments. Common offenders include:
- Parabens (linked to breast cancer and hormone imbalance)
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (used in engine degreasers and shampoo)
- BHT and BHA (preservatives that can promote tumor growth)
- Phthalates (often hidden in “fragrance” and linked to birth defects)
- Petroleum-based solvents like toluene (used in nail polish and hair dye)
Choose safer, proven alternatives.
